Activities
I am a zoologist and molecular taxonomist with a research focus on the biodiversity, taxonomy, and molecular identification of aquatic organisms in Bangladesh. My work integrates traditional morphological analysis with advanced molecular techniques, particularly DNA barcoding using mitochondrial markers such as COI and 16S rRNA, to accurately identify species and resolve taxonomic ambiguities. I have contributed significantly to documenting the aquatic fauna of Bangladesh, reporting numerous first-time species records—including sharks, shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and mollusks—and extending known distribution ranges of marine organisms in regions like the Bay of Bengal, Saint Martin’s Island, and coastal estuaries. My studies span both marine and freshwater environments, offering critical insights into the diversity of coral reef fishes, freshwater fishes, gastropods, and cephalopods. In addition to taxonomy, I have assessed organic pollution in urban water bodies and analyzed the proximate nutritional composition of commercially important cephalopods. Through over 25 peer-reviewed publications, I have built one of the most comprehensive molecular datasets for Bangladesh’s aquatic species, contributing valuable baseline data for conservation, fisheries management, and environmental monitoring. My research supports broader ecological and public health goals, including biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource use.
